Skype has launched a preview of its real time speech translation feature, and you can sign up to start testing it, although there are limited places available and you have to be using Windows 8.1.

Skype Translator allows you to talk and listen as usual, and speech is translated live, with voice and subtitles. It works in the following languages for voice translation: English, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Chinese, Portuguese and Arabic. Chat can be translated in 45 different languages.

Taking part in the Translator Preview is free, but as we said above, there are limited places available. Register here.

Microsoft has not announced a launch date for Skype Translator, and worse still for users, back in May, CEO Satya Nadella suggested the service would not be free. We might not see a release of the final product for another two years.
